New AFDW commander named

Maj. Gen. Sharon K.G. Dunbar has been selected for assignment as commander, Air Force District of Washington, Joint Base Andrews, Md. Dunbar is currently serving as the Director of Force Management Policy, Deputy Chief of Staff for Manpower, Personnel and Services, Headquarters U.S. Air Force, Washington, D.C.

The general's other assignments include serving in a variety of acquisition, political-military and force support positions. Her commands include a mission support squadron, Air Force Basic Military Training and an air base wing. Prior to her current assignment, General Dunbar served as Director of Manpower, Organization and Resources, Deputy Chief of Staff for Manpower, Personnel and Services, Headquarters U.S. Air Force, Washington, D.C.

Her current assignment's responsibilities include establishing force management policies for more than 675,000 Air Force military and civilian personnel. These policies guide the accession, assignment, evaluation, skills analysis and management, promotion, readiness, retraining, separation and retirement of the Air Force's human capital. Her office also oversees aspects of Total Force management to include contingency, mobilization, training management, and rated force policy.

Her selected assignment will put her at the helm of AFDW, a direct reporting unit that provides the single Air Force voice and component to the Joint Forces Headquarters-National Capital Region, as well as organizes, trains, and equips combat forces for the aerospace expeditionary forces, homeland operations, civil support, national special security events and ceremonial events. In addition, AFDW serves as Uniform Code of Military Justice authority for more than 40,000 personnel and provides major command-level support for more than 24,000 personnel assigned worldwide.

Dunbar will be assuming command from Maj. Gen. Darren McDew, who has been nominated for appointment to the rank of lieutenant general and for assignment as commander, Eighteenth Air Force, Air Mobility Command, Scott Air Force Base, Ill.
